Restorative Leaders: All Students Deserve them Now and ALWAYS!

The time for restorative leadership is now. As I reflect on my professional learning and administrative leadership experiences in education over the last 21 years,  restorative leadership comes to mind. Restorative leaders are respectful, resourceful, and relationship builders.

THE FINDINGS

As a licensed trainer for The International Institute of Restorative Practices, I understand the impact associated with the implementation of restorative practices. I have observed the impact of punitive punishments, increased trauma, and the inability to skillfully facilitate authentic partnerships.

In Spite of the negative observations related to restorative practices,  there is hope for the future of education, community organization and local has  been a sense of increased awareness, empathy and community building across our country post 911.  There has been  a stronger emphasis on collaboration and clear communication about perspectives and “truths”. Adults have traditionally been at the forefront of most marches and rallies for racial equity and justice. However,  high school students, middle school and even  elementary scholars have shared their opinions about the state of our leadership.  Learn, empower, act and DREAM BIG.

MY CALL TO ACTION

  1. Learn. Learn all that you can and learn from everyone. ! Education is the key to the future and many opportunities.
  2. Empower others. Building the capacity of others to lead is integral to sustaining legacies.
  3. Act- Acting with a strategic plan helps direct your path.  Personal experiences, training and even social media provide examples of restorative leadership . For example, ‘The Ladies of Howard connected thousands of women on Facebook from across the country and created a scholarship fund for youth. Montgomery County Public Schools and Frederick County Public Schools have allowed me to learn, be empowered, act and dream big.  Frederick County and Frederick County Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc, continue to serve, build  and teach youth of all races. Stay tuned on more suggestions on how you can be more restorative.
